“Then Gideon said to God, ‘If you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said, behold, I am laying a fleece of wool on the threshing floor. If there is dew on the fleece alone, and it is dry on all the ground, then I shall know that you will save Israel by my hand, as you have said.’ And it was so. When he rose early next morning and squeezed the fleece, he wrung enough dew from the fleece to fill a bowl with water. Then Gideon said to God, ‘Let not your anger burn against me; let me speak just once more. Please let me test just once more with the fleece. Please let it be dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground let there be dew.’ And God did so that night; and it was dry on the fleece only, and on all the ground there was dew.” (Judg. 6:36–40)
You have, no doubt, heard several sermons about Gideon’s fleece and his requests for assurance. This little scene has sometimes been used as a prescription for Bible believing folk to ascertain and understand God’s will. The fact of the matter is, that’s not at all what’s going with Gideon’s back-to-back requests for assurance through the miracle of the fleece. Rather than evidence his strong faith, this scene evidences his weak faith. But even that is good news, because ours is a God who delights to use the weakest and feeblest to carry out his wonderful will.
I hope you’ll join us this Sunday, Mar. 26, at 10 AM as, Lord willing, I’ll be back in the pulpit once again, bringing God’s Word to you from chapters 6 and 7 of Judges — as I hope to instill in you the great grace that was likewise given to Gideon. Also, don’t forget about our 6 PM gather, where I’ll be pressing forward in our study of 1 John by looking at chapter 3. It’s always a blessing when God’s people gather around God’s Word, so I hope you’ll be with us as we do so this weekend!
Blessings 🙏 Pastor Brad
