Dear Church,
It’s hard to believe that August is nearly upon us. Soon our summer schedules will give way to school routines. For some, perhaps that is a dismal thought. For others (perhaps many parents), that’s a relieving thought. Either way, we are leaving one season and entering another. That’s sort of what life is about, seasons.
I’m not sure when you’re first taught the four seasons (spring, summer, fall, winter), but it is humbling and, perhaps, daunting to stop and reflect upon how many summers you’ve been able to enjoy. There’s a cycle to those seasons. Spring always follows winter. Irregardless if that groundhog sees his shadow or not, spring will come — of that, we can be certain. After summer, fall arrives, and winter soon thereafter.
And the point is, we have little (if anything) to do with all of that. Seasons come and go, and, for the most part, we are bystanders. We cannot control the seasons. We are at their whim. More to the point, we are at the whim of the One who controls the seasons. A life of fruitfulness and faithfulness, then, isn’t attained when we get frustrated with whatever “season of life” we’re in. When we try and change the season, or pine for a different season, we end up making things worse for ourselves.
A fruitful, faithful life is lived knowing that there’s One behind and above the seasons, working them perfectly and purposefully according to his design. As the Preacher in Ecclesiastes says: “I know that everything God does will last forever; there is no adding to it or taking from it. God works so that people will be in awe of him” (Eccl. 3:14).
As we approach another season, then, may we be instilled with the grace and patience to be okay with God’s timing over the seasons. May we humbly “be in awe of him” who governs the times and the days, and appoints the hours for us. And may we know, truly, that he is the God who is for us.
God bless you church! See you Sunday!
Blessings 🙏 Pastor Brad
